The Worst Guys - Single Review

Alternative Hip-hop duo The Worst Guys have delivered their retro, ‘boom-box-esque’ track, Platform.

Brummie boys Joe Marsh and Louis Prince; better known as The Worst Guys, encapsulate gritty, emotional lyrics which are seamlessly complimented by those staple chilled beats; reminicent of classic Hip-Hop. Released back in August, Platform is their second release this year, following on from their well received single, No Celebrations.

Having formed back in 2019, these guys are already making a statement in the local scene. Taking influence from the likes of Mac MillerEarl Sweatshirt and J Dilla, these guys know how to compose a track which follows a heavy, chilled beat but put emphasis on the lyrics - passionate is the word. This track is a very passionate, heart felt track. It is clear that The Worst Guys have found their sound, as each release feels consistent but unique

Platform is a well composed track demonstrating intelligent lyrics, with well thought out melodies and beats, but is simultaneously catchy and upbeat. This track reflects a mature nature, rapper Louis Prince quotes “22 in a week” giving you an idea of where these lads are at in life, but this track feels so much older than its time. It’s clear to see the likes of Earl Sweatshirt and Flying Lotus have all had a huge influence on The Worst Guys as a duo - and what a solid mix they make.

The one thing which jumps out from the moment you press play on this track is the pure determination and enthusiasm, “the passion will never leave my heart / not on a single beat.” That drive and passion is weaved in throughout the verses, giving an insight into their enthusiasm for what they do.

Each verse is dominated by rapper Louis Prince, or Mr. Prince as he refers to himself mid-track. This is then beautifully complimented by Joe Marsh’s soft, almost dreamy vocals for the chorus. Making for a raw, gritty track but one that possesses that classic, chilled Hip-hop vibe.
