Mahalia headlined the O2 Institute Birmingham in November, taking feel good R&B to another level.
After
seeing Mahalia support Anne-Marie last year, where I instantly took a liking (I
mean, what’s not to like?) She announced her own headline tour and I knew it was not one to miss.
Now where
do I start… the insane vocals, the feel-good energy, or the queues? Yes, you
heard me right, the queue. The line to even get into this gig was ridiculous,
it weaved itself in and out of the streets of Digbeth, and to be honest it
caught me by surprise.
Once
settled in the packed out, iconic Birmingham venue,
accompanied by some people who need to learn a little about gig etiquette (but
that’s a story for another post). The night started with R&B, soul artist
‘HAMZAA.’ I could not have imagined a better support for Mahalia. With insane
energy and vocals, this sultry, soulful artist defiantly got the crowd going.
Mahalia, 21
started the night off with ‘No Pressure’ an upbeat, passionate tune that set the
vibe for the show from the get go. Some of my favorite tracks from her
debut album ‘Love and Compromise’ did not disappoint live, ‘Simmer,’ ‘honeymoon,’ and ‘consistency’ were the
tracks that really stuck out for me personally - effortless.
What I truly loved about this show was the wholeness I felt, Mahalia made it clear that this was a carefree, no judgment zone. The fact that she gave us a personal background to a variety of the songs she has written, really giving them meaning before performing them – this little touch felt like we were just chatting to a friend and I loved that inclusion.
The entire venue was buzzing after the show, without sounding cliché, I genuinely came out of there feeling like a proud bomb ass woman – Mahalia is an amazing advocate for not only loving yourself and the skin you’re in but also believing in yourself and I LOVE that. If you’ve read a few of my posts before you will know that I really appreciate music/artists that promote self-love and sending out all that positive energy and Mahalia does just that.
