Four piece Birmingham band who go by the name of Rookie released their debut single Once a little while ago now. With their indie rock sound and main focus on the lyrical side of things, I'm truly surprised it's taken this long to stumble across this band.
Once is a track that holds a lively beat and is complimented by well written lyrics that carry the song nicely. Citing the likes of Catfish and the Bottlemen; and stating most recently that they take massive influence from the likes of Sam Fender, this is really audible throughout their material. This small local band have made a very strong platform with this debut track - one that they can use to demonstrate what they're all about and it's enabled them to establish their own unique sound. Once is full of fun; opening with twangs of guitars, deep bass lines and fast paced drum beats, it's upbeat and lively at first glimpse. However, if you really concentrate on the lyrics this contradicts that whole initial idea. Check it out below:
Since the release of Once, Rookie have gone on to release multiple other tracks like 'What I Want' and 'Ignorant bliss', which are distinct to their sound. But if you want to really get a feel for the sound of this band Once truly sets the tone, definitely a good track for them to lay the foundations on.
It's clear that this up and coming band have great potential. Releasing more music, followed by headlining multiple local gigs and building a steady fanbase, I'm sure it won't be long until we hear more from these guys and I can't wait to see what's next for Rookie.
