Chartreuse release statement debut single 'Three Days'
I stumbled upon Chartreuse whilst rummaging through the endless variety of bands Birmingham has to offer. You see, being from Brum and studying music journalism I am always on the hunt for fresh, local talent and to be honest it can sometimes feel slightly overwhelming as Birmingham is home to so much diverse talent.
So.. whilst scouring for something that really grabbed me, I found them. They go by the name of Chartreuse and originate from the Black Country; The alt-indie, RnB style band released their debut single “Three Days” and the beautiful thing about this song is the variety. Not only have they stuck to the alt-indie/RnB genres, but they’ve also effortlessly incorporated hints of soulful jazz, and this takes skill. It's like adding the right amount of spice to a dish... Sometimes too much can be overpowering but just enough and you have that kick! This jazz sound gives this song just that, it makes their music so beautifully textured.
“Three Days” speaks the tale of heartbreak, front man Michael Wagstaff provides such powerful, yet smooth vocals on this single. This track seems to follow the style of an inner monologue, full of desperation and bearing his everything lyrically – then sweetly complimented by deep bass lines and light tinkerings. 'Three Days' evokes all the emotions you should be feeling when listening to a well written and well produced song. For me, it is all about a powerful emotion, whether that be sad, happy, or whatever; I feel strong emotions give music more purpose, and that is something this single has. And again, what really gives this track charm is the sultry sound, it’s effortless. Listen below:
I personally think that music like Chartreuse's' is extremely refreshing to hear, breaking up the typical indie/rock music genres, which are always dominating the Brum music scene, despite the diversity lurking in the background, which this track shines a light on.
It’s hard to believe that this is Chartreuse's debut single. With such a brave, bold song they really have taken a risk, but it has paid off. They’ve made a strong statement showing what they are all about and I can’t wait to see what is next for these guys.
